SUSTAINABILITY

As farmers and turf growers for over thirty-six years, looking after our environment is at the heart of what we do.

  • Sovereign Turf will never use plastic in its grass.

When you buy turf, it should be just that. Turf. But many turf growers and suppliers use plastic netting to help speed up the growth of their turf. This means lots of people get an unpleasant surprise when they decide to landscape their garden and find tough, non-biodegradable plastic netting in their lawn.

At Sovereign Turf we never use plastic in the production of our turf, so landscapers and gardeners can trust the turf they buy from us is 100% natural.

  • Our region is the driest in the country, so it’s vital we are responsible with our water usage.

To avoid strain on local resources we have three large reservoirs across our farms and are in the planning stage for a fourth. Our light sandy soil is exceptional at draining so we have plenty of water to draw on when we need to irrigate during the dry months.

We also rent out our land on rotation to outdoor pigs, and for planting other vegetable crops including potatoes, carrots and sugar beet. This reduces the demand for water so we have enough to to keep our beautiful turf healthy.

  • We do everything we can to minimise the amount of turf that’s wasted, but occasionally it’s unavoidable. Maybe a roll of turf isn’t cut to our high standards, or perhaps a delivery driver encounters significant delays with traffic which stops us delivering the turf as fresh as we’d like.

In these rare cases, we compost the turf back into our fields, feeding the nutrients back into the soil.

  • We have planted and manage 30 hectares of countryside stewardship land. This includes wildflower space that provides a vital habitat and eco-system for local wildlife, supports the abundance of bees in our area and even provides food for wild birds.

We also manage 48 hectares of established woodland across our farms. This helps wildlife conservation, the ecological health to the farm and has environmental benefits such as carbon and noise control. It also adds and maintains the area of natural beauty.

The woodland is managed by our farm team, whose duties include tree surveying, tidying bracken and brambles, and keeping the general area tidy and healthy.

On our farms we have miles of hedgerow, and we are planting more each year, as part of our commitment to help rebuild the nation’s network of hedges. As well as being part of the classic beauty of England’s rural landscape, they form the largest wildlife habitat in the UK, reduce soil erosion, filter harmful pollutants from the air and the soil, help trap carbon and cut down the noise of working machinery.

  • Grass is an environmentally friendly choice compared to other surfaces. It is the world’s third most important oxygen source, with fifty square feet of grass producing enough oxygen for a family of four.

Grass significantly improves air quality by trapping airborne dust particles and contaminants. It maintains surface temperatures 10-14°C cooler than concrete or tarmac, which is crucial in an era of global warming. Additionally, grass cools and cleans the air by reflecting the sun’s heat, absorbing noise, and sequestering CO².

Underground, turf purifies rainwater. Its root mass and microbes capture and break down pollutants as water moves through the soil.

Our Heritage

For over forty years, the Warings have cultivated more than just turf; they’ve nurtured a tradition that spans generations, blending traditional farming practices with modern innovations.
